The Labrador Breed
The Labrador Retriever is a type of retrieving Gundog. He is one of the most popular breeds of dog in the United Kingdom, United States and South Africa. He is outgoing, even tempered, gentle, agile, kind, intelligent and trusting. Not only is he a friendly companion but he is also a useful working dog.
Historically, he earned his keep as a fisherman's helper, hauling nets, fetching ropes and retrieving fish from the chilly North Atlantic Ocean. No wonder he has a short, thick and harsh double coat that repels water and he loves to swim! He was, and still is, extensively used as a "pick up dog" for wing-shooting enthusiasts. Today's Labrador Retriever is as good-natured as his ancestors, and he is widely used as an assistance dog to the handicapped, search and rescue dog, scent detection dog for various applications and of course, a beloved family pet.
